Iliotibial Band (IT Band) Syndrome is an overuse injury of the long elastic-like ligament located on the outside of the thigh. It runs from the hip area down to the knee and is a common cycling injury.
A healthy IT Band helps rotate the hip, lift the leg sideways, and stabilises the outside of the knee.
If the posture of the foot, leg or hips is not correct, then the IT Band can be stressed leading to rubbing, inflammation and pain along the outside of the knee and thigh.
Diagnosis can be made based on symptoms, however, it is more important to identify the main causes of IT band syndrome to ensure future incidences are prevented.
A full posture and gait analysis from a qualified health care professional can identify the most common causes.
A collapsed foot posture increases the chances of developing this condition because of the resultant effect on the legs and hips.
Any excessive twisting of the thigh and unbalancing of the hips will stress the IT Band.
MASS4D® supports the foot in its best posture allowing the legs and the hips to be balanced. This correction relieves tension from the IT Band allowing a return to proper function and reduction of pain.

Pilates refers to a series of exercises that target the core – the abdomen, obliques, lower back, inner and outer thigh, and so on. The movements involved in pilates also help to improve flexibility and posture while promoting core stability.
