Sesamoiditis is a painful condition that gradually develops in the ball of the foot, most often under the big toe. Sometimes, there may be swelling or bruising in the area. You could also have difficulty in moving or bending your big toe.
Athletes that participate in sports such as basketball or running are vulnerable to sesamoiditis because of the constant pressure placed on the ball of the foot. This also applies to ballet dancers who are required to perform complex foot movements.
While commonly found in athletes and dancers, sesamoiditis can also occur if you frequently wear shoes that don’t fit you properly or are too tight for you. Such shoes cause repeated trauma to the small bones located in the front of your foot, leading to pain and inflammation in the region.
What Are Sesamoids
Sesamoids are small bones that help protect your tendons, or the tissues that join your muscles to bones, from injury by reducing friction. In the foot, you’ll find these bones near the toe joints.
The other functions of sesamoid bones in the foot include – helping tendons transfer muscle forces, stabilising toe movements, absorbing pressure and evenly distributing weight in the toes.
Certain physical activities can increase pressure on the feet and as a result, multiply the muscle forces being spread through the sesamoids. For example, forces that are equal to thrice your bodyweight pass through the sesamoid bones while running.
These forces can gradually put enormous strain on the sesamoids which become inflamed over time and cause sesamoiditis.

Treatment Options
If you’ve been diagnosed with sesamoiditis, it would be advisable to stop any activity that could put weight on the ball of the foot and cause more pain. Athletes should return to sports only after consulting their doctor.
Your doctor may recommend medications to reduce foot pain depending on the extent and severity of your condition; certain types of injections may also be suggested to minimise swelling in the foot.
You should avoid wearing high heels or any ill-fitting shoes that could hurt the sesamoids more; choose comfortable footwear that doesn’t cramp your toes.
This type of footwear should be paired with MASS4D® foot orthotics that can protect the injured sesamoids as you walk.
These orthotics help to promote an equal distribution of weight in the feet which lowers any excess strain on the affected sesamoid bones during movement; this lessens inflammation in the area while giving the sesamoids time to heal.
MASS4D® aims to protect your feet not only from sesamoiditis, but from other foot conditions as well that could develop as a result of foot posture problems such as flat arches.
You’re able to see maximum results for your foot condition while being protected from other conditions in the long run.
