Scoliosis refers to an abnormal, C or S-shaped curve of the spine, when viewed from the front or back. Scoliosis can be present in three ways:
Uneven shoulders, hips and the knees are amongst the common visual changes in the body in this condition.
Structural scoliosis, in many cases, is irreversible and may be caused by spinal injuries or infections, neuromuscular disorders or bone defects from birth. It involves a fixed deviation of the spine from its normal straight position.
Functional scoliosis, on the other hand, occurs in a structurally normal spine that lacks balance and symmetry from left to right side. Functional scoliosis is treated simply by finding the true cause of posture imbalance and correcting it.
Leg length difference is one of the more common causes of poor spinal posture. A study in the Archives of Medical Science observed that 83% of the children had a noticeable correction of the curve during the first two weeks of treatment which involved internal shoe lifts.
Weak foot posture in one or both feet can also be considered as one of the causes of poor spinal posture. A flatfoot posture often causes twisting of the shin and thigh bones that visually appears as a shortened leg. This creates imbalance in the knees, hips and the lower back, adding more stress to the regions.
