Rheumatoid arthritis is known to cause foot problems that include pain and/or stiffness in the joints, swelling, numbness, bunions, ulcers, etc.
Such problems can have an impact on everyday activities by creating difficulties in walking or by increasing the risk of falls.
It has been reported that even in patients recovering from the condition, up to 40% continue to experience problems in the feet.
The authors decided to conduct a survey among UK-based patients with rheumatoid arthritis in order to determine the frequency of their foot problems and to examine its impact on their lives.

A questionnaire was prepared and distributed for this purpose.
Almost all the participants said that they had experienced foot problems at some time.
While majority reported the presence of one or more foot problems, more than half of the patients said they had five or more problems in their feet.
One of the biggest challenges in treating foot problems for patients with rheumatoid arthritis is the provision of timely and appropriate foot care services.
Although most of the patients in this study said they were able to access foot care, the extent of their foot problems highlights the importance of providing efficient services in a timely manner.
The authors of the study agreed that treatment efforts need to be coordinated better among a variety of doctors in both clinics and hospitals.
This is because of the different forms of treatment that may be required such as insoles, surgery, special footwear, etc. depending on the severity of the condition.
