If you’re used to working long hours on your feet, you may fully understand the importance of wearing comfortable footwear on the job.
You may also be aware of the health risks related to standing for long hours – fatigue, cramps, body pain, swollen feet, etc.
A study headed by Jennifer Anderson at the University of Salford sought to determine the footwear needs of workers with jobs that required standing on their feet for majority of the day.
This included interviewing people from different backgrounds to understand their work experiences in demanding environments and their ideal shoe choice.

Staff from 3 kitchens and 1 veterinary hospital participated; both environments consisted of hard flooring throughout.
Most of them described their symptoms as involving pain or aches both during and after work – with back pain reported to be the most common type.
Participants also complained of aches in their shins, knees, calves and feet.
When asked about the type of features they desired in their choice of footwear, the workers responded that they primarily looked for comfort, cushioning, support and fit.
The functions of the shoe that were considered ideal for job demands included grip, durability, safety, weight, breathability, individualisation of shoes, and ease of wearing and removing.
The main factors that influenced initial footwear choice were found to be price, change/choice of footwear, cleaning and style.
